IT Services & Consulting covers technology consulting, outsourcing, systems integration, managed services and cloud and data-center infrastructure providers. MoatScope covers 35 companies here. One has a wide moat, eight a narrow moat and 26 none.
How the industry makes money
Most of the industry bills for people and projects: consulting engagements, long-term outsourcing contracts and managed services. A newer group rents out computing capacity from its own data centers.
Where the moats are
Switching costs appear in all nine moat-rated companies: an outsourcer that runs a client's systems accumulates knowledge that is costly to hand over. Intangible assets appear in six and cost advantages from offshore delivery scale in five.
- IBM: a hybrid-cloud and enterprise-software company anchored by Red Hat, with consulting and infrastructure businesses built around it.
The narrow-moat group includes Accenture, Infosys, Cognizant, Wipro, CGI, EPAM and the data-center operator GDS. The cloud and data-center newcomers, including Nebius, CoreWeave and Applied Digital, carry no moat.
What wears moats down
Automation of routine coding and support work can shrink billable hours, clients push hard on price, and wage inflation squeezes margins. The capacity providers carry heavy debt and depend on a few large customers.
What to watch
- New bookings and deal sizes.
- Pricing and wage costs.
- Debt and customer concentration at the capacity providers.
