What is being separated

MSG Rangers Corp. will own the New York Rangers, the National Hockey League franchise that plays at Madison Square Garden under a long-term arena license with MSG Entertainment. Madison Square Garden Sports, to be renamed MSG Knickerbockers Corp. and re-tickered MSGK, keeps the New York Knicks. The Rangers carry an undrawn $250 million revolving credit facility and a $16.5 million NHL advance as of June 30, 2026.

Stated rationaleMSG Sports' board authorized a tax-free separation of the Rangers from the Knicks in February 2026 so that each franchise becomes its own listed company with its own board and capital structure.

The write-up

Madison Square Garden Sports is separating the New York Rangers from the New York Knicks. The Rangers business goes into MSGS Spinco, to be renamed MSG Rangers Corp. and listed on the NYSE as MSGR, while the remaining company is renamed MSG Knickerbockers and re-tickered MSGK. Holders receive one Rangers Class A share for every two MSG Sports Class A shares; the Class B stock — and with it voting control — goes to the Dolan family on the same basis, so both companies will be controlled companies. The dates are blank in the September 2026 amendment.
