Entertainment, Streaming & Games covers film and television studios, streaming services, music, live events, sports franchises and video games. MoatScope covers 71 companies here. Four have a wide moat, 16 a narrow moat and 51 none.

How the industry makes money

Revenue comes from subscriptions, advertising, licensing, tickets, media rights and game purchases. Scale matters: Netflix, the largest subscription streaming service in the world, spreads its content spending across hundreds of millions of paying members. Disney earns across studios, television, Disney+ and Hulu, ESPN and its theme parks and experiences.

Where the moats are

Intangible assets, meaning characters, franchises and rights, appear in 11 of the 20 moat-rated companies, and efficient scale in ten, where a league, a team or a venue cannot be copied.

  • Netflix: global scale that lets it outspend rivals on content per member, plus a large base of engaged subscribers.
  • Disney: franchises that earn across film, streaming, parks and merchandise, and sports rights through ESPN.
  • Formula 1, owned through Liberty Media: exclusive control of a global racing series and its media and event rights.
  • Madison Square Garden Sports: the New York Knicks and Rangers, two of the most valuable franchises in their leagues.

The narrow-moat group includes NetEase, Spotify, Warner Bros. Discovery, Electronic Arts, Live Nation, Take-Two and Roblox. Companies without a moat include Roku, Paramount Skydance and Starz.

What wears moats down

Entertainment is hit-driven, so even strong studios and game publishers see results swing with each release. Content costs keep rising, every service competes for the same hours of attention, and the decline of traditional pay television keeps eroding the networks built on it.

What the quality scores say

Netflix scores 74 on MoatScope's quality scale and NetEase, rated narrow, 73. The industry averages 28.

What to watch

  • Subscriber growth, pricing and advertising tiers at the streaming services.
  • Box-office and game-release performance.
  • The cost of sports media rights.

Moat ratings and quality scores on this page update as companies report. Price versus fair value for every company in the industry is in the screener.

Markets

MoatScope splits Entertainment, Streaming & Games into 5 markets. Each table ranks the businesses in one market by revenue and shows each one's share of the market's total: companies filed under this industry, the segments of companies filed elsewhere that compete in it, and the largest companies MoatScope doesn't cover, such as private companies and companies listed outside the US. Each market's total comes from a cited source and covers the geography its businesses compete in (a national market counts only US revenue). A company that runs several businesses is split by the segments it reports.

73 companies.

Market share is a company's revenue in its main market (Market column) as a share of that market's total: every company in it, including private companies and companies listed outside the US (sources under each market above). Revenue is for the fiscal year closest to 2025, and a market that is national (such as US banking) counts only US revenue. Companies that run several businesses are split by the segments they report, and each segment counts in its own market. A dash means the market has no reliable total yet, or no revenue was reported for that year.

Price versus fair value for every company is in the screener.
