For a genuine long-term compounder, the moat is what allows high ROIC and a long reinvestment runway to coexist. Any business can earn high returns on early investments when the market is underpenetrated and competition is sparse. The question is whether those returns hold as the capital base grows and competitors study what's working. Durable moats — switching costs, network effects, cost advantages, intangible assets — are what prevent ROIC from reverting to the cost of capital as the compounding continues.
